God Works All Things for Good

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” Romans 8:28 NLT

Everything. Even the stuff that isn’t good right now.

I love to look for good and find it right away.  A conflict at work becomes an opportunity for deeper relationship and understanding. A “no” leads to a new direction and something much better. A personal struggle results in unexpected growth, freedom, confidence, and joy.

But some of us are going through things that I can’t even pretend to find a silver lining for. It is really, really hard to understand how anything good can come from a teenager running away to drugs, or a marriage falling apart, or an illness that takes a life too soon.

But this promise doesn’t say that we have to understand the why. Or that we even get to see the good in this lifetime.

This promise reassures us that God is redeeming everything that happens to his children. I like to picture Him painting a gorgeous mural of intricate detail and surprising beauty over all of us–way, way higher than we can see right now. Our heartaches, our mistakes, our disappointments… all glowing new and beautiful in this brilliant design.

He knows what is going on in our lives and hearts. Every detail matters to our God who loves us.

And He will work it all together for good because HE IS GOOD.
