ONE LIGHT
one (adj): only, unique, solitary, single
light (noun): something that enlightens, illuminates, makes vision possible
“You will do well to keep focusing on it. It’s the one light you have in a dark time…” 2 Peter 1:19
Peter got to experience something that we can only imagine for now.
When he and James and John went with Jesus to the Mount of Transfiguration, they got a little bit more than a glimpse of God’s glory. First, they got to see their friend Jesus transformed right before their eyes. From the inside out, he became light–shimmering, glistening, shining with the brightest white they had ever seen. Then, as they were enveloped in this light-radiant cloud from above, they got to hear the actual voice of God saying, “This is my Son, marked by my love. Listen to him.” Mark 9:7
So when Peter talks about light, I want to pay attention.
And what he encourages us to do in this verse is to keep focusing on it. He wants us to read and think about and depend on God’s light–his word in our day to day lives.
So I do. I think about the promises, the prophecies, the stories, the miracles, the letters of encouragement and instruction that we read in the Bible, and I imagine trying to live without them. It seems like trying to go for a walk in the pitch-black night without my flashlight.
Without my flashlight, I’m actually in danger of getting hurt or lost.
Without that circle of light in front of me, I can’t see where to step. The asphalt is rough–bumpy and sunken in places that could trip me up and make me fall.
Without a bit of light shining from me, I am not visible to cars coming toward me on the road.
Without the ability to see what’s around me, I get anxious and startled more easily. I can’t tell where the noises around me are coming from. I make decisions based on fear rather than understanding.
We all walk through this life and find that it is often dangerous, scary, and confusing. Even when things seem to be going along fine, unexpected bumps and potholes and noises and detours come up and catch us off guard.
Without God’s word, it is really hard to know which way to go sometimes.
But if the light of Jesus is our one light–our focus–every part of our walk becomes clearer, calmer, and more fun. He faithfully shows us the best way, keeps us safe, and gives us an eternal perspective about the things we are dealing with.
Can we let him light up our way today?
Invite Him in: Ask Jesus to reveal more of his love and truth to you right now. Walk with him, step by step, focusing on the light that he is shining on your path. Like the sunrise breaking through the darkest early morning, his words will show you the way to the joy and peace and beauty and wholeness of life with him.
