BRIMMING

verb: to be full, often to overflowing

“Do you see what we’ve got? An unshakable kingdom! And do you see how thankful we must be? Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God.” Hebrews 12:28

Here we are in the season of gratitude.

Thanksgiving is around the corner, and we start to tune our hearts to all the good things we appreciate in our lives.

We thank God for our families and friends, for health and home, for gifts of nature and music and food.

And we thank him that we have been given the eternal gifts of his unshakable kingdom:

We are safe and protected in his strong and gentle hands.

We are forgiven and free in his unconditional love.

And we can count on his promises of truth and peace to guide us through our lives on this earth.

“Do you see what we’ve got?”

Yes, we have much to be thankful for.

But let’s not stop there.

“Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God.”

Brimming with worship.

Full. Often to overflowing.

How do we worship to overflowing?

Do we have to gush with emotion? Dance and sing and shout like crazy? Maybe. Sometimes.

But overflowing doesn’t mean overdoing. Overflowing means spilling over.

So, if I’m whispering my gratefulness to God, I don’t stop with thank you. I can let my whispers of thanks rise up into whispers of praise.

If I’m writing a list of things I’m grateful for, my words of thanks can lead into words of praise to the One who gave them to me.

And if I am sharing my gratitude with a friend, the conversation becomes even more meaningful as we celebrate not only what God has given us, but who he is.

No matter what the season or the situation, we have so much to be thankful for. And in our abundance, we overflow with gratefulness to and reverence for the God who gives us everything good. We can experience peace in our storms, joy in our sadness, and hope in our suffering because he has included us in his unshakable kingdom that he will rule forever.

Invite Him In

Let’s remember what we’ve got. All the people, all the things, all the blessings Jesus so generously gives. We truly are filled to the brim, and we can’t hold back any longer. Not just on special occasions–but every single day–let’s let our thanksgiving overflow into praise-giving to him.
