BE
verb: to occupy a place or location, to have a certain position; to have life, to exist
Let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t. Romans 12:6
I love cards. I love reading them; I love sending them; I love browsing the card racks for the perfect design with just-right words. Today, one caught my eye with its words in bold, pink print on bright yellow paper: “Just be you.”
I wanted to buy it for everyone I know.
Because sometimes we get confused about just being. We count on all kinds of things that don’t belong in the definition of who we are: how we look; what we’ve done; where we live, work, shop, or go to school or church; what we eat or don’t eat, drink or don’t drink; what other people think of us.
But God looks past all that. He sees who we really are, just the way he made us. He wants us to peel off those outer layers one by one and bring them to him. He wants us to trust him, letting him take us to the heart of who we are and rest there.
He will help us be our real selves when we look to him instead of everyone else.
We don’t have to be afraid. We just have to start noticing…
Where am I right now? This community, this job, this family I am part of–I just need to be here. Be present. Bring to this place, these people the gifts that God has given me.
How am I right now? Tired, lonely, insecure, needy? Strong, capable, excited, creative? Probably a mix of both. I don’t have to fake it, pretending I’m okay all the time. I can allow myself to feel. I can stop and breathe and ask for what I need.
Back to the card in the gift shop…I think God would want to send it to you. He wants you to know this:
You being you in him is much more important to him than you doing things for him.
You being you is his gift of freedom and grace. You don’t have to prove yourself. You don’t have to earn his love.
You being you means you don’t have to work so hard. He has already made you beautiful, valuable, gifted with everything you need to live a life of love.
Just be you.
Invite Him In
Just be yourself with him. Trust him to do his beautiful work of revealing the real you. He made you, and he loves you more than you could possibly imagine. You are treasured, precious, cherished by him–just the way you are.
